One control center for your insurance operations
Above the loan book sits a single view of the insurance protecting it — active policies by type, premium held, coverage exposure, the policies expiring soon, and the claims in progress. Insurance stops being a separate register and becomes part of the portfolio you already manage.

Insurance workflows are designed with Tanzania's insurance operating environment in mind — TIRA is the insurance regulator, and credit-life is a recognized category. Ustawi provides the software workflow; it does not, on its own, guarantee regulatory compliance, and applicable requirements depend on your products and framework.
Insurance follows the loan
Insurance is not a separate product bolted on the side — it rides the loan's own lifecycle. From the policy created at disbursement, through premium, changing cover and a claim, to the loan and ledger updated at settlement, each step is tied to the loan it protects. Follow one policy through it below.
Tap a stage to stop on it. Hover pauses the animation.
Every policy is connected to the exposure it protects
This is the heart of the product. A credit-life policy is linked to the loan and its outstanding balance; an asset policy is linked to the collateral that secures it. Because the links are real, cover, claims and accounting all trace back to the exact exposure.
Policies, from product set-up to renewal
Configure the insurance products you use
Insurance products are set up once — the insurer, the coverage type, how the premium is calculated, and how the sum insured behaves — then reused whenever a policy is issued. The workflow above runs on the products you configure here.
The products, insurers, rates and covered events are configured per institution.
Issue insurance when the loan is created
A policy is issued against the loan it protects, at origination — so there is no separate insurance register to keep in step by hand. The premium is calculated from the sum insured and the configured rate, and the effective dates follow the loan.
The premium rate and product are configured per insurer and product; the sum insured follows the loan.
Coverage follows the outstanding exposure
On a decreasing-balance loan, the outstanding amount falls every month. For configured decreasing-balance credit-life products, Ustawi steps the sum insured down in line with that balance — so cover matches the real exposure instead of drifting above it and over-charging the borrower.
| Month | Loan balance | Sum insured |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | TSh 8.0M | TSh 8.0M |
| Month 6 | TSh 6.6M | TSh 6.6M |
| Month 12 | TSh 4.7M | TSh 4.7M |
| Month 18 | TSh 2.6M | TSh 2.6M |
| Month 24 | TSh 0.4M | TSh 0.4M |
The solid line is cover tracking the declining balance. The dashed line is what a fixed policy would do — staying high and over-insuring for most of the loan's life.
Protect the collateral behind the loan
Asset insurance is managed alongside credit-life, linked to the collateral it covers. The policy sits on the same record as the asset in Collateral & Guarantors, so cover, value and expiry are visible next to the security itself.
Never lose sight of an expiring policy
Ustawi tracks policy expiry and surfaces the policies that need attention, with renewal reminders so a lapse in cover does not slip by unnoticed. The renewal decision stays with your team — the reminders make sure it is a decision, not an oversight.
| Customer | Policy | Type | Expires in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upendo Salon | AS-00457 | Asset policy | 14 days |
| Baraka Mushi | CL-1874 | Credit life | 19 days |
| Peter Michael | AS-00461 | Asset policy | 24 days |
Ustawi tracks expiry and sends renewal reminders; issuing a renewal remains your team's action.
Claims, from notification to settlement
Manage every claim from notification to settlement
When a claim is lodged, everything the team needs sits in one workspace — the policy, the loan, the current sum insured, the claim amount and the documents — with a workflow that shows exactly where the claim is.
- Claim notification
- Policy record
- Loan statement
- Supporting document
- LodgedComplete
- AssessmentIn progress

The claim amount is assessed against the current sum insured and outstanding balance.
Assess the claim against the actual exposure
Assessment is where the loan-policy link pays off: the assessor checks the claim against the live policy status, the outstanding balance, the current sum insured, the verified event and the required documents — before it can move to settlement.

The assessor and decision are recorded on the claim history.
No single person controls a claim end to end
Role-based controls separate claim initiation, assessment and settlement, so the same person can never both raise and pay out a claim. Each step is owned by a different role, and who did what is recorded.
Settlement updates the loan and the ledger
A settled claim is not a write-off. The insurer's payment posts as a real repayment against the loan, so the borrower's balance and the general ledger both reflect what actually happened — money received and applied.
| Dr | Bank (insurer payment) | TSh 4,356,376 |
| Cr | Loans receivable — #2087 | TSh 4,356,376 |
The exact accounting entries depend on your configured accounting treatment.
Claim complaints and appeals
Not every claim decision is accepted, and a fair process has to allow for that. Where a borrower disputes a claim outcome, Ustawi records the complaint or appeal against the claim, tracks its review, and keeps the resolution — so the governance around a decision is as visible as the decision itself.
Ustawi records and tracks the complaint/appeal; it does not assert a specific statutory resolution deadline — applicable timeframes depend on the insurance product and framework.

Insurer balances, audit trail and analytics
Insurer reconciliation
Because premiums are collected on behalf of insurers, finance teams need to see the full picture per insurer — what was expected, what was collected, what has been remitted, and what is still payable. Ustawi reconciles the premium liability against remittances so nothing owed to an insurer goes unaccounted for.
| Insurer | Expected | Collected | Remitted | Payable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit-life insurer | TSh 6.1M | TSh 5.9M | TSh 5.6M | TSh 0.3M |
| Asset insurer | TSh 3.7M | TSh 3.5M | TSh 3.3M | TSh 0.2M |
A policy and claim audit trail
Every material action on a policy or claim is recorded with a timestamp and the user — the same Control → Action → Evidence → Audit story that runs across the platform. Finance and audit teams can see exactly what happened, and when.

Connected across the Ustawi platform
Insurance is not a standalone module. It reads and writes against the same loan, collateral and ledger records as the apps around it — so cover, claims and accounting all trace back to the exposure they protect.

When a borrower dies or an asset is lost, credit-life and asset cover keep a hardship from becoming a default — the claim clears the loan, the family is not chased for the balance, and the lender is made whole. Ustawi's job is to make that cover reliable: linked to the loan, priced to the exposure, and settled through a controlled workflow.

No — it posts as a GL liability from the moment it is collected, and clears when it is remitted to the insurer. It is never booked as income.
